If there is an area of human life that is particularly misunderstood, it is the emotional intelligence area. Besides, it seems strange to call "intelligence" something that regularly brings the most stupid mistakes! Nevertheless, it is a very special form of intelligence that can serve us greatly.
I often broaden the very words used to pray, "the body is an excellent servant, but a terrible master", to the so-called emotional and mental bodies. It is because these two share a great deal of the rules that govern the physical world, but go further in subtlety and need to feel that they are being directed. Otherwise, chaos, entropy and decay will reign.
Imagine that, in spite of intellectually knowing how to brush our teeth, we didn’t do the simple things like buying the necessary items or proceeding with the act of brushing. The physical consequences would be evident.
The same principle applies when we do not use the common sense to analyze an emotional discomfort. Wouldn’t this discomfort be a simple feedback that something is being neglected?
Why deplore that the teeth must be washed, if we can transcend the problem by washing them? Why deplore what is felt, when one simply can transcend the emotion by responding affirmatively to the unsatisfied need?
Rather than deplore negative emotions such as fear, anger or jealousy, the problem that faces those who want to grow and mature is to be brave and to not deny anything that's happening. Start from the point of acceptance of things as they are, use the emotions as nutrients and produce a transformation in the direction you chose. An interesting result is the following: by not having repressed or ignored the fear, we learned to transcend it and to make brave choices. None of the so-called noble feelings could be valued without having its opposite to refer to for comparison. This is the dual nature of the dimension in which we live.
Putting emotional intelligence at work means taking ownership on what we are feeling, not in a way that perpetuates limiting emotions, but in a way that empowers us to create new emotions that literally take the negative ones and then create transformation.
Thus emotional intelligence and leadership are very connected, because the mastery conquered over ourselves allows sensitivity and tolerance in the relationships we have with other people.
Are there several kinds of emotional intelligences? Of course, and that's the beauty of it. As soon as you feel mastery over your emotional world, it is very easy to detect how the common denominator that unites human beings can be lived in multiple ways, without judgement or prejudice.
Developing emotional intelligence is a great way to sincronize our need for inner freedom and the pleasure of being integrated with feelings of love, joy and bliss. These feelings can then be expanded and energize us in a way that doesn't create dependency, because we understand that the ultimate freedom resides in living with total surrender. The emotional pleasures aren't the ultimate goal, but a way of enjoying the journey.
I wish that you succeed at gradually unmasking the immateriality of fear and that you take an excellent habit of maintaining healthy and empowering emotions through a set of various kinds of emotional intelligence exercises to use on your day-to-day life.
